Top destinations in Naples to explore!

Naples Underground
A fascinating journey 40 meters below the city to explore a subterranean world of Roman aqueducts, and World War II air-raid shelters.
Book early, as I missed the chance t see this exciting tour as I tried to book when I was in Rome before getting on the train to Naples.

Toledo
A UNESCO World Heritage site, this is the heart and soul of Naples. Its narrow, bustling streets are lined with ancient churches, artisan shops, and pizzerias. I was quite enchanted with the old center as it has an incredible energy and I enjoyed a great afternoon meal at Trattoria A’ Figlia d’a Maruzza (see slideshow pics).

Banksy’s Madonna
Throughout the city of Naples, you’ll find wall murals sometimes hidden, others in plain view. One of the more famous murals is ‘Madonna con ia Pistola’ (Madonna with a Gun) by Banksy, located in PIazza del Girolamini. This depicts the Virgin Mary with a pistol instead of baby Jesus, and is a notable example of Banksy’s provocative and socially outspoken work.

Pompeii Ruins
The world-famous Roman city, frozen in time and remarkably preserved after being buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. It’s a vast archaeological site where you can walk through ancient streets, villas, and amphitheaters.
A more preserved buried city, Herculaneum, contains multi-story buildings and delicate items like wooden furniture still intact may also be a journey worth booking.

The Lungomare (Waterfront)
The Lungomare is a popular promenade offering stunning views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. It stretches along the coast from Mergellina to Via Partenope, encompassing Via Caracciolo and areas such as Santa Lucia.
The Lungomare is a great spot for walks, enjoying the sea breeze, and taking in the vibrant atmosphere filled with restaurants, cafes and bars.

Neapolitan Pizza
Indulge in authentic Neapolitan pizza, renowned for its thin crust, fresh toppings, and wood-fired oven cooking. Some famous locations include:
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, featured in the movie Eat, Pray, Love.
Pizzeria La Notizia, featured on Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy (Naples episode)
Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, widely believed to be the first pizzeria in Naples.
Getting Around Naples:
Naples has 4 funicular lines that are part of its public transportation system including Centra, Chiaia, Mergellina and Montesanto. These funiculars connect to different parts of the city including Toledo (the city center), the Vomero district and the port area (Mergellina). I used the funicular daily to go between where I was staying in Vomero to travel down to the core city center in Toledo.
Travelling to Naples as a single female concerned me as I had heard that it is rough and that I may need to be more careful compared to travelling through Rome or Venice, however my airbnb owner assured me that over the last 15 years that it has completely changed and that I will not be bothered. He was right, I didn’t experience any issues or street harassment – only kind Italians happy to help when asking for directions and serving me in trattorias and bars.
